Project Summary
Project Acronym
ACCSEPT - Acceptance of CO2 Capture, Storage Economics, Policy and Technology
Project Abstract
The aim of the ACCSEPT project is to contribute to the timely and responsible application of CO2 capture and storage (CCS) by measuring EU social acceptance of CCS; assisting with the establishment of CCS guidelines for the EU ETS; and by identifying and addressing gaps in existing socio-economic studies.
The ACCSEPT project will achieve these objectives through:
- A process of measurable, phased and focused stakeholder engagement.
- The project team's own expert evaluations based upon its current comprehensive knowledge base of CCS and understanding of the key knowledge gaps for EU-level policy making in this area.
- A process for addressing in gaps in overall CCS knowledge.
- Production of targeted recommendations that will make outputs of the project useful for solving difficult CCS challenges.
Objectives of the project and state of the art
CCS suffers from significant institutional uncertainties. As a result of the associated risks and uncertainties, potential project developers may be hesitant to aim for deployment of CCS on a significant scale, which could be a cause of delay of action on climate change, thus exacerbating the impacts of climate change on ecosystems and human life. The main overall impact of the proposed project activity is that the institutional risks and barriers are partially brought down, thus allowing and potentially enabling greater CCS deployment.
The aim of the ACCSEPT project is therefore to contribute to the timely and responsible application of CO2 capture and storage (CCS) by measuring European social acceptance of CCS; assisting with the establishment of guidelines for the EU ETS; and by identifying and addressing gaps in socio-economic studies. The ACCSEPT project will achieve these objectives through:
- A process of measurable, phased, and focused stakeholder engagement across industry, governmental agencies, key special interest groups, and, to some extent, the general public based upon scientific survey and interview techniques.
- The project team’s own expert evaluations based upon its current comprehensive knowledge base of CCS and understanding of the key knowledge gaps for EU-level policy making in this area.
- Addressing gaps in overall CCS knowledge, which are identified through a literature review and gap identification process.
- Production of targeted recommendations that will make output of the project useful in the solution of difficult issues and impediments.
